Parmeet Sethi: My Son Almost Played Kuljeet In DDLJ Musical
Actor Parmeet Sethi, who became famous for playing Kuljeet in Aditya Chopra’s 1995 film Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (DDLJ), recently shared that his son Ayushmaan Sethi was almost chosen to play the same role in the stage version of the film.
During a YouTube Live to celebrate one million subscribers on their family channel AAAP Ka Parivaar, Parmeet said that Ayushmaan had auditioned for the Broadway musical Come Fall in Love, which is based on DDLJ. “He was shortlisted for the role of Kuljeet in the West End adaptation of DDLJ. He almost got it,” Parmeet revealed.
Ayushmaan, who joined his parents during the live session, explained why he didn’t get the part. “They were looking for someone with a strong background in Western classical singing. I do have some experience, but not enough for what they wanted,” he said.
Parmeet’s wife and actor Archana Puran Singh also joined the conversation, saying, “As an aspiring actor, it’s very tough to describe what you’re doing. In India, we call it ‘struggle,’ but we prefer to say ‘aspiring actors.’”
Both Ayushmaan and his elder brother Aaryamann Sethi have studied acting at the Lee Strasberg Theatre & Film Institute in New York.
The musical version, directed by Aditya Chopra and produced by Yash Raj Films, is titled Come Fall in Love – The DDLJ Musical. It stars Jena Pandya as Simran and Ashley Day as Rog, and premiered in the UK at the Manchester Opera House in May 2025.
The original DDLJ, released in 1995, starred Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol, Amrish Puri, Anupam Kher, and Parmeet Sethi. The film became one of India’s biggest romantic hits and turned Shah Rukh Khan into a superstar.
