It’s been 35 years since Aashiqui (1990) hit the big screen and became a superhit. The film made Anu Aggarwal and Rahul Roy stars overnight. On this special occasion, Anu shared some memories from that time.
She remembers how director Mahesh Bhatt called her and said, “Aashiqui is a hit!” That moment felt like a big shock of happiness. “Fans were outside my house, writing ‘I love you Anu’ on the walls. It was wild!” she said. Anu also shared how a group of schoolgirls once screamed and ran toward her at the airport. That’s when she realised how big the movie had become.
Aashiqui was such a big success that a remake (Aashiqui 2) came out in 2013 with Aditya Roy Kapur and Shraddha Kapoor, which also became popular. A third part with Kartik Aaryan was planned but later dropped due to legal problems.
When asked about the remakes, Anu shared, “Our film’s tagline was ‘love makes life live’. Every generation has its own way of showing love. So naturally, a film made 35 years ago and one made now will look and feel different.”
Did the remake do justice to the original? Anu replied honestly, “Remakes try to be like the original, but they can’t be the same. Each film is different. I think it’s unfair to judge. Everyone is trying to express art in their own way.”
