Indian filmmaker Anuparna Roy made history by winning the Best Director award in the Orizzonti (Horizons) section of the 82nd Venice Film Festival. She won for her first film, Songs of Forgotten Trees, which was presented by Anurag Kashyap.
This was the only Indian film in the Orizzonti section this year, and it received a great response from the audience and jury.
Anuparna was teary-eyed while receiving the award. She dedicated her win to all women around the world, saying:
“This film is for every woman who has been silenced, ignored, or underestimated. I hope this win inspires more women to tell their stories.”
The film stars Naaz Shaikh and Sumi Baghel, and is produced by Bibhanshu Rai, Romil Modi, and Ranjan Singh. It tells the story of two women in Mumbai whose lives get connected in surprising ways.
The producers said the journey of making the film was not easy, but Anuparna’s passion kept them going. They also said women’s stories are strong, honest, and deserve to be told.
