Lyari Locals Divided On Their Depiction In Dhurandhar

When the trailer of Aditya Dhar’s new spy thriller Dhurandhar came out, it revealed that the story is set in Lyari, a well-known town in Pakistan. The film presents a semi-fictional version of the Lyari gang wars that lasted for almost 10 years from 2009. Now, people living in Lyari have shared their reactions — and they are mixed.

What the Trailer Shows

In the trailer, Ranveer Singh plays an Indian spy who enters the Lyari gangs. The movie also includes real-life personalities like:

  • Rehman Dakait (played by Akshaye Khanna)
  • SP Chaudhary Aslam (played by Sanjay Dutt)

The makers of Dhurandhar recreated the entire Lyari town on a set in India — including the famous arched entrance gate, which appears clearly in the trailer.

What Lyari Residents Said

Pakistani channel ARY News asked Lyari locals what they think about how their town is shown in the movie.

Some people said:

  • The filmmakers should have asked them for details:
“India walon ne film bana li, humse to poochte. Hum unko asli Lyari dikhaate.”
  • Akshaye Khanna’s look as Rehman Dakait doesn’t match the real gangster.
  • Sanjay Dutt’s look as SP Chaudhary Aslam is correct.
  • Many invited Ranveer and Sanjay to visit Lyari so they can show them the real streets.

Others praised the trailer and said it captures Lyari’s atmosphere very well:

  • “Jaisa inhone shoot kiya hai, waisa hi environment hai Lyari ka,” said one resident who had experienced the gang wars firsthand.

About Lyari

Lyari is one of Karachi’s oldest areas. Over the years, gangs took control of the locality and operated their criminal activities across the city. Leaders like Uzair Baloch and Rehman Dakait were powerful and even had political support. SP Chaudhary Aslam led major operations to break these gangs in the late 2000s.

About Dhurandhar

Dhurandhar mixes these real incidents with fictional elements from India’s fight against terrorism. The film also features:

  • Arjun Rampal as an ISI Major
  • R. Madhavan as an Indian intelligence officer

The movie is set to release in theatres on 5 December.
