Filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma has been acquitted in a 2018 cheque bounce case after settling the matter with the complainant company through a Lok Adalat.
The company had filed a complaint in 2018 against Varma’s firm for a bounced cheque. Earlier this year, a judicial magistrate had found Varma guilty under the Negotiable Instruments Act and sentenced him to three months in jail, along with a fine of ₹3,72,219.
Varma had filed an appeal against this decision. During the appeal, both Varma and the company agreed to resolve the matter amicably through a Lok Adalat, a forum where legal disputes are settled mutually. Following this, the sessions court acquitted him and closed the case.
According to the complainant’s lawyer, the company had supplied hard disks to Varma’s firm between February and March 2018, worth ₹2,38,220. Varma issued a cheque in June 2018, but it bounced due to insufficient funds. A second cheque also bounced, leading the company to take legal action.
Ram Gopal Varma is known for directing hit films like Satya, Rangeela, Company, and Sarkar.
