Anupurna Wins Venice Best Director, Wasn’t Into Films Before

Filmmaker Anuparna Roy has made history by winning the Best Director award at the Venice International Film Festival for her film ‘Song of Forgotten Trees’. Her father, Brahmananda Roy, revealed that Anuparna never showed much interest in films during her school days, but she later followed her passion with determination.

Anuparna initially worked in the IT sector in Delhi after graduating with English honors. During the COVID period in 2021, she moved to Mumbai to try filmmaking. Despite having no prior experience, her self-belief, dedication, and hard work helped her succeed.

Her father shared how the family was initially worried about her career choice but grew proud as they saw her commitment. He recalled the moment she called to share the news of her Venice win—it left the family overjoyed.

The film, ‘Song of Forgotten Trees’, explores the relationship between a migrant actress and a corporate worker in Mumbai. Anuparna is the first Indian to win the Best Director award in the Orizzonti section at Venice.

Her parents are excited to welcome her home in Kulti, West Bengal, and she will also meet Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee during her visit. Brahmananda shared that Anuparna loves home-cooked meals, mostly vegetarian, and has been missing traditional dishes like rice, sabji, dhokar dalna, fish, and mutton.

Anuparna’s journey is a story of passion, perseverance, and breaking new ground in Indian cinema.
