When the trailer of Param Sundari released, fans loved Janhvi Kapoor and Sidharth Malhotra’s cute chemistry and light comedy. But some viewers were upset with Janhvi’s portrayal of a girl from Kerala. Many said Malayali girls don’t always do Mohiniyattam, and women from Kerala don’t always wear jasmine flowers in their hair.
Malayali actor Pavithra Menon first questioned Janhvi’s casting on Instagram. Later, influencer Divya Nair criticized the trailer for incorrect Malayalam words and poor diction. She pointed out that in the scene where Janhvi introduces herself as Theykkapetta Sundari Damodaran Pillai, the word Theykkapetta actually means someone who has been dumped in Malayalam. She also noted that Janhvi mispronounces the surname as Pillai instead of Pilla.
Janhvi responded during promotions, saying her character is half Tamilian and half Malayali, and she is not from Kerala herself, nor was her mother Sridevi.
