Karan Johar recently won the National Film Award for Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment for his movie Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani. Interestingly, he had also won the same award for his first film, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, released in 1998.
Actor Janhvi Kapoor spoke about Karan Johar’s journey as a director in an interview with Mirchi Plus. She praised how he has grown and changed with time.
During the chat with co-star Sidharth Malhotra, Janhvi talked about romantic movies. She said that Mani Ratnam’s Saathiya has a toxic love story, but it shows how filmmakers evolve with society. She added, “Karan Johar is a great example. Kuch Kuch Hota Hai was iconic, but when he made Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani, you can see he is a very evolved filmmaker and feminist. That’s a true sign of an artist.”
About the films:
Kuch Kuch Hota Hai starred Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol, and Rani Mukerji. It was loved for its music and fresh pairing but faced criticism later for gender stereotypes.
Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani starred Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt. The film addressed feminism, women empowerment, and gender stereotypes. It was a big hit, earning over ₹300 crore.
Karan Johar also announced that he will return as a director in 2026 with a classic, old-fashioned Hindi film.
