Filmmaker Karan Johar has approached the Delhi High Court asking for protection of his personality rights. He wants to stop people from illegally selling merchandise or using his name without permission.
This comes shortly after actors Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai were given similar protection by the court. The court had earlier stopped websites and platforms from misusing Abhishek’s name, photos, or signature for profit without his approval.
The court said such misuse affects an actor’s reputation and goodwill, as these attributes are linked to their career. It also noted that many websites and platforms were using AI and other tools for this purpose.
In the Bachchans’ case, websites like Bollywood Tee Shop, Tee Public, Ice Poster, Top Pix, Wallpaper Cave, Wallpaper.com, GM Authentic Autos LLC, JS Sham Rock and Etsy were named as defendants. Several YouTube channels and even Google LLC were also listed.
The court order underlined that right to publicity or personality rights means the right of an individual to control and protect their image, name, or likeness.
