For years, dance numbers in Bollywood have been a topic of debate. Many people questioned their need in movies and accused them of promoting vulgarity. But Malaika Arora believes that these songs have evolved — they now focus more on performance than provocation.
In a chat with The Hollywood Reporter, Malaika said that earlier, dance numbers were mostly about glamour and spectacle, often ignoring a woman’s individuality. “Today, filmmakers are more conscious. They add these songs with proper context, showing women with strength and confidence. It’s less about being provocative and more about presence and performance,” she explained.
Malaika also admitted that such songs are often linked to the male gaze but shared her own perspective. “For me, dance is about confidence and expression. When I perform, I focus on enjoying the moment. As long as I feel comfortable and in control, that’s what matters. It’s about celebrating art and having fun rather than worrying about labels,” she said.
Recently, Malaika appeared in the dance number Poison Baby in Ayushmann Khurrana and Rashmika Mandanna’s film Thamma. She said the song celebrates her journey and proves that passion and talent have no age limits.
Malaika, known for iconic songs like Chaiyya Chaiyya, Gur Naal Ishq Mitha, and Munni Badnaam Hui, continues to be a strong presence in Bollywood. She also judges India’s Got Talent with Shaan and Navjot Singh Sidhu.
