Bollywood filmmaker Vivek Agnihotri recently spoke about working with the late Irrfan Khan in his directorial debut Chocolate. He remembered Irrfan’s unique acting style and the on-screen chemistry he shared with Anil Kapoor.
Vivek said Irrfan was very spontaneous. “He’d rehearse one thing but give a completely different take on camera. His co-actors never knew what to expect,” he shared. Anil Kapoor, on the other hand, followed the script more closely, full of energy. Vivek added, “It was like a friendly competition between Anil Kapoor and Irrfan — both trying to surprise each other in scenes.”
Off-camera, Vivek remembered Irrfan’s lighter side. He often dozed off during gatherings and had to be carried back to his room. “Off-set he was a completely different person,” Vivek recalled.
Irrfan Khan passed away in April 2020 at the age of 53 after battling a neuroendocrine tumour.
Chocolate, released in 2005, also starred Sunil Shetty, Emraan Hashmi, Arshad Warsi, Tanushree Dutta, and Sushma Reddy. It was inspired by the American film The Usual Suspects.
Vivek Agnihotri’s next film, The Bengal Files, featuring Mithun Chakraborty, Anupam Kher, Pallavi Joshi, and Darshan Kumar, is set to release in theatres on 5 September.
