The Conjuring: Last Rites – Horror Meets Fairytale Ending

For over ten years, The Conjuring series has been a benchmark for modern horror. Known for more than just jump scares, the films have always focused on Ed and Lorraine Warren, a couple who faced supernatural threats using faith, love, and courage. The Conjuring: Last Rites (2025) marks the final chapter of their story.

The story follows one of the Warrens’ most personal cases. Lorraine faces visions of losing her husband, daughter, and son-in-law, making the stakes very emotional. This personal angle makes the film more grounded, showing that real terror can come from losing loved ones, not just fighting demons.

Patrick Wilson (Ed) and Vera Farmiga (Lorraine) once again deliver strong performances. Wilson is calm and witty, while Farmiga balances strength with vulnerability. Their chemistry remains the heart of the series.

The first half of the movie builds a strong, eerie atmosphere with dark hallways, shadows, and subtle whispers. But the second half leans on familiar horror tropes like exorcisms and possessions. While effective, these scenes feel less creative than in earlier films.

The climax feels rushed and less intense than expected. Despite high stakes, the tension doesn’t reach the thrilling heights the series is known for. Director Michael Chaves focuses more on emotional farewell than on sustained horror, making it less frightening but more heartfelt.

Where the film succeeds is in giving proper closure. Surprise cameos from the Conjuring universe and the final scenes provide a touching goodbye. The post-credits sequence features real footage of Ed and Lorraine Warren, leaving a lasting impression.

The Conjuring: Last Rites may not be the scariest in the franchise, but as a finale, it’s a fitting and emotional farewell to two iconic characters.
