Aap Jaisa Koi, now streaming on Netflix, brings a fresh idea — a love story between two people in their 40s and 50s. In a world full of young romance, this is a rare and welcome change. But sadly, that’s the only thing the film gets right.
R Madhavan plays Shrirenu, a shy, middle-aged Sanskrit professor who has never been in a relationship. At his friend’s suggestion, he joins a sex chat app. Around the same time, he meets Madhu (Fatima Sana Shaikh), a French professor. They fall in love, but when he learns something about her past, things start to fall apart.
Madhavan and Fatima give their best, but the weak script holds them back. Madhavan has some touching moments, but they don’t land well because of how clumsy the rest of the film is.
The songs by Rohit Kohli and Justin Prabhakaran are okay — they suit the film’s mood but don’t stand out.
Aap Jaisa Koi had the chance to be something different and meaningful. It talks about love and freedom at an older age, but the message gets lost due to weak storytelling. Watch it only if you’re curious to see a middle-aged romance — just don’t expect it to leave a lasting impact.
