Kesari Veer, directed by Prince Dhiman, is a historical drama that tries to tell the story of Hamirji Gohil, a brave warrior who stood up to protect the Somnath Temple from invader Zafar Khan (played by Vivek Oberoi). He is helped by Vegdaji (Suniel Shetty) and the Bhil tribe in this mission.
While the idea sounds strong, the movie suffers from trying too hard to look like big films such as Padmaavat and Chhaava. The sets, costumes, and action scenes try to copy Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s grand style, but fall short in execution.
Sooraj Pancholi, who plays Hamirji, lacks emotion and fails to leave an impact. His performance is flat, even in important scenes. Suniel Shetty does bring some seriousness to the role of Vegdaji, but the story doesn’t support his efforts. Vivek Oberoi tries to act like Ranveer Singh’s Khilji, but ends up overacting.
The film also adds an unnecessary romantic track. In the middle of a war, the hero stops for a full wedding scene, which feels very out of place and slows the story down. The second half becomes confusing and even funny when it’s not supposed to be.
The climax scene is clearly inspired by Chhaava, but it doesn’t match its intensity or emotion. The VFX and editing are weak, and many characters come and go without any real impact.
