The Hunt Review: A Gripping Take On Rajiv Gandhi Case

The Hunt: The Rajiv Gandhi Assassination Case is a seven-episode series directed by Nagesh Kukunoor. It’s based on Anirudhya Mitra’s book Ninety Days: The True Story of the Hunt for Rajiv Gandhi’s Assassins. The series is serious, gripping, and stays true to facts. It keeps viewers hooked without over-dramatizing anything.

Storyline:
The show begins with the shocking event of Rajiv Gandhi’s assassination on May 21, 1991, by a suicide bomber during a Congress rally in Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu. The woman who carried out the attack was part of LTTE, a Sri Lankan rebel group.

The story follows CBI officer Kaarthikeyan (played by Amit Sial), who forms a special team to find the culprits. This team includes standout characters played by Sahil Vaid, Bagavathi Perumal, Danish Iqbal, Girish Sharma, and Vidyut Garg. On the other side, we also see the attackers’ perspective, especially their leader Sivarasan (played by Shafeeq Mustafa). The drama unfolds over 90 days of intense investigation.

What Works:
The show’s strength lies in its solid investigation scenes, strong performances, and great attention to period details. The production design and editing are top-notch, creating the feel of India in the early ’90s—landlines, old furniture, and all.

Kukunoor avoids adding unnecessary drama and focuses purely on the investigation. The storytelling is honest, balanced, and lets viewers form their own opinions.

Verdict:
The Hunt is one of the most powerful and realistic shows of the year. With tight writing, great direction, and a gripping narrative, it stands out as a must-watch.
