Rajkummar Rao goes full massy in his latest film Maalik, released in theatres this weekend. Directed by Pulkit, the film shows Rajkummar in a totally new avatar — a tough and ruthless gangster — a big change from his usual sweet, small-town roles.
Maalik’s advance bookings began on Wednesday afternoon. But by Thursday evening, things didn’t look good. Only 6,500 tickets were sold in the three major multiplex chains—PVR, Inox, and Cinepolis. Even after a night of sales, the numbers didn’t improve much. The film’s opening is clearly off to a slow start.
Because of low bookings, Maalik is expected to earn around ₹3-4 crore on Day 1—but even that is seen as an optimistic guess. Some experts believe it may not even make ₹2 crore.
This is much lower than other similar films. Sunny Deol’s Jaat made ₹9 crore on opening day. Rajkummar’s own film Bhool Chuk Maaf opened at ₹7.2 crore. Maalik might not even reach half of that.
