Santosh Director Sandhya Suri Calls CBFC’s Ban ‘Heartbreaking’

The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has blocked the release of the Hindi film Santosh in India. The board said the movie shows too much about misogyny, Islamophobia, and police violence.

Santosh is the UK’s official entry for the Oscars. Even though it was made by British and French producers, it was fully shot in India. The film has won praise and awards around the world.

Director Sandhya Suri said she was shocked and heartbroken by the CBFC’s decision. In an interview, she said, “These topics are not new to Indian films, many movies have shown them before.”

The CBFC gave a long list of cuts to be made, but Sandhya felt it would ruin the story. She tried to find a way to release it in India, but the cuts were too many and would have changed the whole film.

Santosh tells the story of a young widow who becomes a police officer and investigates the murder of a Dalit girl. The film stars Shahana Goswami and got a great response at the Cannes Film Festival.

For now, Indian viewers may not get to watch Santosh in theaters.
