Anubhav Sinha’s debut web series, IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack, dives into a true story about the hijacking of Indian Airlines Flight 814 in 1999. Unlike his past work, where he could use his imagination, Sinha sticks closely to the facts, presenting the hijacking and its aftermath in a balanced way.
The story follows the dramatic events when five armed men hijacked the plane from Kathmandu, Nepal, to New Delhi and took it to Kandahar, Afghanistan, controlled by the Taliban. At a time when the world was welcoming a new millennium, India was caught in a tense struggle to save 180 passengers.
Sinha brings together an incredible cast, including Pankaj Kapur, Naseeruddin Shah, and Vijay Varma, who portray Indian officials and airline crew. The series captures the chaos and conflict behind the scenes in India’s intelligence and government offices while giving a nod to the brave passengers and crew onboard.
Although not a high-intensity thriller like “Neerja,” the series is compelling for its portrayal of real events. It shows moments of tension, such as negotiations with the hijackers and conflicts within the Indian government. The cast delivers strong performances, adding depth to the series.
The show raises questions about the decisions made back then: Did India make the right choices? Should ordinary citizens pay the price in such situations? It doesn’t provide easy answers, leaving the audience to reflect on the complexity of the situation.
Overall, IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack is a must-watch for those interested in real-life political dramas and the untold stories of bravery and resilience.
