Filmmaker Aanand L Rai has strongly opposed the AI-edited version of his 2013 film Raanjhanaa, starring Dhanush and Sonam Kapoor. He shared an emotional post on Instagram, calling the situation “deeply upsetting” and a “betrayal.”
He said that the film was re-released after being modified using AI—without his permission or knowledge. “The last three weeks have been surreal and heartbreaking,” he wrote.
Aanand Rai said Raanjhanaa was created with passion, collaboration, and creative risk, and watching it get changed like this feels like a violation of the team’s hard work. He also mentioned that neither he nor his team was involved in the AI-altered version.
“This is not the film we made. It was shaped by human feelings and flaws,” he said. “What’s now being shown is not a tribute—it’s a reckless takeover that removes the film’s soul and intention.”
He added that using AI to change a film without consent is not creativity, but disrespect.
