Karan Johar: Big-Budget Flops Are Overhyped

This year, many big-budget Hindi films struggled at the box office, with a few exceptions like Chhaava. Karan Johar, producer of Mirai starring Teja Sajja, recently spoke at the film’s press meet and defended Bollywood against criticism of underperforming big films.
Karan Johar Backs Bollywood
When asked if high production costs and star fees cause failures, Karan said every film has its own destiny. He added that even films with big stars have sometimes worked, and other times they haven’t. “You can’t put everything in a box. Young actors with a strong vision can also make successful films,” he said.
Not Every Film Can Be a Hit
Karan explained that not all musicals with newcomers will become hits like Saiyaara. He gave examples: while Saiyaara earned ₹569.75 crore against a ₹50 crore budget, and the animated film Mahavatar Narsimha earned ₹319 crore, other films might not achieve the same success. He emphasized that storytelling is the key, and ultimately, it’s the audience who decides if a film succeeds.
