London Film Festival To Honor Shyam Benegal
The London Indian Film Festival (LIFF) 2026, one of the UK’s largest celebrations of Indian cinema, is all set to honor the legendary filmmaker Shyam Benegal. Scheduled for June-July 2026, this edition promises a spectacular lineup of films, including a special screening of one of Benegal’s iconic masterpieces, celebrating his incredible contribution to Indian cinema.
Festival director Cary Sawhney said the event will also showcase restored classic films from the 1950s, offering audiences a rare glimpse into the rich history of Indian filmmaking.
Shyam Benegal, a pioneer of parallel cinema, created timeless classics like “Ankur”, “Mandi”, and “Manthan”, inspiring generations of filmmakers. Benegal passed away in 2024 at the age of 90, leaving behind a remarkable legacy that continues to influence Indian cinema today.
In addition to honoring Benegal, LIFF 2026 will present films in Punjabi, Gujarati, Assamese, and South Indian languages, giving a platform to diverse voices and underrepresented regions. The festival will also focus on women filmmakers, LGBTQ stories, and unique narratives, highlighting the vibrant and inclusive world of Indian cinema.
This is a must-attend event for cinephiles, offering a unique opportunity to relive Shyam Benegal’s masterpieces, explore classic and contemporary Indian films, and celebrate the richness and diversity of Indian storytelling in the UK.
