Sanya Malhotra On Her Films’ National Award Wins

Winning a National Award is one of the biggest honors for Indian artists. But Sanya Malhotra’s joy is three times bigger this year — because Jawan, Kathal, and Sam Bahadur have all won at the 71st National Film Awards.

“When I found out all three films were being honored, I had to take a moment,” says Sanya. “It’s rare and I don’t take it for granted. As an actor, you never know how people will react to a film, but you follow what excites you. This has reminded me to always trust my gut.”

Kathal won Best Hindi Feature Film, Jawan brought Shah Rukh Khan the Best Actor award, and Sam Bahadur won Best Feature Film Promoting National, Social, and Environmental Values, along with Best Makeup and Best Costume Design.

Talking about Kathal, Sanya says, “It still hasn’t sunk in. We started with this unusual, quirky story, and now it’s being celebrated at such a level — it’s overwhelming. I’m so proud of the team.”

Do awards matter to her? Sanya smiles, “Awards don’t define your worth, but they do feel special — especially the National Award. It’s emotional, it’s humbling, and it feels like the country is recognizing your work.”
