Perfect Family: Honest Look At Therapy And Trauma
Movies like Kapoor & Sons, Dil Dhadakne Do, and Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara have shown how messy and emotional families can be. Perfect Family takes this idea further—what happens when such a family walks into therapy together? That is the main concept of the show. But does the story have enough depth to turn this idea into a full series?
Perfect Family is available to watch on YouTube.
The Story
The show is about the Karkaria family, a Punjabi household. The family includes Manoj and Seema Pahwa as the parents, their son (Gulshan Devaiah) and daughter-in-law (Girija Oak Godbole), their daughter (Kaveri Seth), and two grandkids.
One day, the granddaughter has an anxiety attack at school because of constant fighting at home. This forces the whole family to start group therapy together.
What Works
The show begins strongly by asking an important question: How much does a child’s mental health depend on the adults around them?
Across seven episodes, the story goes up and down, but it still manages to deliver emotional and honest moments. The cast is talented, and many scenes feel real and relatable. One funny moment is when Seema Pahwa’s character hears the word “sadma” and asks, “Sridevi wali?” which perfectly shows how many families misunderstand mental health.
Each family member has a difficult past, and although it sometimes feels like a lot, the intention is clear—they want to show how every person carries emotional baggage.
Where It Struggles
The show uses too many flashbacks. Constantly jumping between past trauma and present therapy can get confusing. It becomes hard to follow what is happening in which timeline.
Strong Performances
The actors keep the show engaging.
- Hirva Trivedi, as the young girl, performs beautifully and makes her emotional scenes believable.
- Manoj Pahwa delivers another powerful performance as the loud but loving father.
- Seema Pahwa plays the quiet, reserved wife well.
- Gulshan Devaiah shows the frustration and pressure of his character effectively.
- Girija Oak Godbole does well, though her backstory could have been stronger.
- Kaveri Seth’s role feels less developed.
- Neha Dhupia, as the therapist, brings calmness and balance to the story.
Final Thoughts
Despite its flaws, Perfect Family is still a watchable series. It understands that families are messy, emotional, and yet somehow still stay together. The show doesn’t always hit the right notes, but when it does, it brings warmth and heart.
