Vir Das Defends Air India After Crash: ‘Best Crew In The Sky’

After the tragic crash of Air India flight AI171 in Ahmedabad, which took over 260 lives, the airline has been facing a lot of hate online. But comedian Vir Das stepped up to show his support for the crew.

On Thursday, Vir shared a heartfelt post on X (formerly Twitter), saying, “It’s a tragic day for so many families. All our prayers are with them. I’ve flown Air India all my life. It’s not perfect, but they’ve always had the best crew in the sky.”

He added, “We don’t know exactly what went wrong yet, but I can’t imagine how hard it is for the crew to do their job right now, especially after losing their own. Just wanted to say—I stand with them.”

What Happened in the Crash?
The Air India flight, heading to London from Ahmedabad, crashed just 33 seconds after takeoff. The Boeing 787-8 hit a building near BJ Medical College. It had 230 passengers and 12 crew on board. Over 260 people died, including ex-Gujarat CM Vijay Rupani. Only one person reportedly survived.

PM Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, and Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu all visited the crash site and shared condolences. PM Modi said the tragedy was “heartbreaking beyond words.”

As people try to process the disaster, Vir Das’s message brings a reminder of the human side of airline workers who are also grieving.
